From 2004 to 2007 I visited the west side of Scotland in either February or March.
I have used the flights from Stansted to either Prestwick (Ryanair) or Glasgow (Easyjet).
Ongoing transport was the train (to Crianlarich, Loch Ossian, Fort William and Oban)
or bus (to Glen Coe).
In June 2008, this time taking my tent and camping, flight to Prestwick, then train
to Fort William, camping in Glen Nevis for 2 nights. Then train to Malliag, ferry
to Armadale and bus to Sligachan, camping there for 3 nights. Then I walked across
the pass to Glenbrittle, camping for 3 nights. Then I walked back across the pass
to Sligachan, and then on the bus to Uig, camping for 5 nights. Then on the bus
to Portree, camping for a final 8 nights. Then, all in one day, bus back to Fort
William, train to Glasgow / Prestwick, flight to Stansted and bus back to Colchester.
In March / April 2010 I visited the Cairngorm region of Scotland, by train from Colchester
to Aviemore. Two nights in Aviemore, then on foot to Glenmore where I stayed for
5 nights, then back on foot to Aviemore (through deep snow!), where I stayed another
2 nights. Then replacement bus to Perth (due to the snow) and train to Edinburgh,
where I stayed 3 nights over the Easter Weekend in University Accomodation. Then
back to Colchester by Train.
On most of these occasions I have stayed at Scottish Youth Hostels (Crianlarich,
Loch Ossian, Glen Nevis, Glencoe, Oban, Aviemore and Cairngorm Lodge). Except for
camping on the June 2008 trip and using University accomodation in Edinburgh in 2010.
